Car Mods Australia partnered with Afterpay to improve their customer experience. But the automotive parts retailer soon discovered Afterpay drove business benefits, too.

Car Mods Australia’s customers include everyone from P-platers who’ve just purchased their first car to professional racing car drivers. But regardless of why they shop with Car Mods Australia, these customers are all looking for the same thing: high-quality automotive products at a reasonable price.

That’s why so many car enthusiasts come to Car Mods Australia, which launched in 2009 with a mission to offer performance automotive parts without the high mark-ups typically applied by other retailers. 

Offering Afterpay helps make Car Mod Australia’s parts even more accessible to motoring enthusiasts by enabling them to purchase the part they want, and pay it off in four instalments.

“We were one of the very first automotive industry retailers to offer Afterpay,” says Car Mods Australia’s marketing manager Ben Holdaway. “We jumped on it because we thought the car enthusiast should have access to top-quality parts, which are obviously generally quite expensive, and we didn't want them to be held back by that initial cost.”

Not only has Afterpay helped customers access car parts, but it’s helped grow Car Mods Australia’s business, too, by increasing sales, driving up basket size by 70 per cent and helping the brand reach new customers, including a new generation of car enthusiasts.

When Car Mods Australia launched in 2009, there were just one or two Australian operators offering performance car parts.

“The mark-ups on the products were just ridiculous compared to [the actual cost] of getting them into the country,” says Holdaway. “There was a hole in the market for importing the best brands at fair retail and we’ve carried that through.”

Fast forward a decade and that commitment to value has seen Car Mods Australia become a leader in the performance automotive industry within Australia. Today the business employs 40 staff and offers more than 400,000 SKUs from 500 international brands.

Afterpay increases sales by 20 per cent

From the moment that Car Mods Australia activated Afterpay – via a simple plug-in on its Neto by Maropost e-commerce platform – it’s been popular with customers.

“The day we turned it on, pretty much right away, we saw a 20 per cent increase in revenue, and that 20 per cent has continued every day since,” says Holdaway.

In 2024, he adds, 20 per cent of all revenue was driven through Afterpay as the payment method.

“[Afterpay] has definitely opened us up to new customers [who are] putting more items in the cart,” says Holdaway, who explains that it’s simple for customers to pay with Afterpay. “It's a single click on the checkout page. Just click Afterpay, and it's as easy as that." 

Afterpay increases basket sizes by 70 per cent

Afterpay hasn’t simply helped increase total revenue and attracted new customers; it’s increased basket size, too. Holdaway says that customers who purchase with Afterpay spend 70 per cent more on average.

“We know that customers are using Afterpay for mid-to-high-range products,” he says.

Afterpay is easy to set up with Maropost 

As a fast-growing business, Car Mods Australia decided to build their website using software company Maropost, which offers a suite of features that suit automotive businesses and could scale as the business grew.

Holdaway says that activating Afterpay on Maropost’s platform was simple.  

“It’s actually quite easy to set up Afterpay,” he comments. “We just linked it within our Maropost account. Maropost offers lots of plug-ins and options to link with different gateways, so it was as simple as just linking our account.”

Afterpay provides ongoing support

Holdaway says that as well as the business growth benefits, Afterpay also provides excellent customer support. He adds, “We get support whenever we need it. I can email someone or phone someone and I get a response that day. Afterpay also informs me about marketing strategies and they also hold Afterpay Day twice a year.”

Holdaway says that this collaborative approach and commitment to customer service is important to Car Mods Australia, which is staffed by a team of dedicated motoring enthusiasts who are all involved in a range of motorsports initiatives and competitions outside of work.

Holdaway says he would ‘definitely’ recommend Afterpay to other businesses. He explains, “There has not been one downside to having Afterpay. It has really been beneficial to our business.”
